Lagos State Government To Improve Statistical Infrastructure and Funding

Governor Akinwumi Ambode has pledged to improve the provision of statistical infrastructure and funding in the state to ensure timely, reliable, qualitative data acquired in the state. Good to Know, but why is statistical infrastructure needed? For statistical illiterates like myself, Statistical Infrastructure comprises activities and services that are administered to support a strong statistical system. That sounds like loads of information with no understanding. Statistical infrastructure in a lay man’s language, are the tools and knowledge that allows anyone to produce reliable official statistics. Now that definition communicates better. Statistic infrastructure is important to any nation’s development, meaning the relationship between the citizens and the state is enhanced as lacuna that is created can easily be sorted through, with the prompt response of the government when provided with credible information An increase in data management, data sharing, designing a formidable social and economic policy as well as good governance is derived as those in the helms of affairs can facilitate both legally and financially the identification, management and access of data of its citizen. According to an advice given by The United Nations Resolution on World Statistics Day, 2010, the National statistical system in any country should get more attention if the country is to have an orderly and definite development programs. So, it is noteworthy to mention that the administration of Governor Ambode is ready to fund statistical infrastructure, offer to provide quality data that would help take appropriate actions that would give dividends of democracy, through good governance, to the people. This he made known by his representative, Special Adviser on Education, Mr Obafela Bank-Olemoh at the opening of the three-day maiden edition of International Statistics Conference organized by the National Statistical Association held on Wednesday in Lagos. Ambode said the state was conscious of the difficulty involved in data explosion or data revolution in its statistical system.
