Lateef Jankande Road which links Ojodu Berger to the state secretariat, Ikeja, Ogba Industrial Estate and Agege among many others will be closed to vehicular movement beginning from the midnight of March 28 till April 9, 2014. The road closure is necessary in order to complete the on-going construction of the underground drainage channel on WEMPCO road in Ojodu Local Council Development Area. Mobereola who was represented by the authority’s Director of Roads and Traffic Management, Mr. Funso Elulade at the meeting, said that it is imperative that the entire road is closed for the contractor, Messrs Arab Contractor Nigeria Limited to complete works. We have decided to close the road by WEMPCO Road junction to traffic to reduce the traffic gridlock that it might cause. He continued, “The expansion project started in 2012. We are at 90 percent completion and the remaining percent is just to cross the Lateef Jakande road and discharge the water into the Omole Phase 1 gorge. The essence of the drainage is to de-flood the whole of Agege Pen Cinema, Agege Local Government and Ogba, Ojodu LCDA and channel the water into Omole Phase 1 gorge, Ojodu LCDA.” He explained that ”The road closure does not stop movement in and out of WEPCO Road. The only movement it will stop is exiting WEPCO road, driving into Ogunnusi road, but for the motorist from Obafemi Awolowo Road, Ikeja they either make a left turn at ACME or WEMPCO Road. We are just closing the road immediately after the junction. Motorist from Ojodu, Berger and some areas in Ogba will not be able to make use of Lateef Jakande Road; rather, they will either make use of the Abisogun Leigh and Abiodun Jagun Road to link WEMPCO Road.” According to the State’s Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Kayode Opeifa, officers of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) will be deployed to ensure that traffic gridlock in the axis is managed to reduce the effect of the closure. The state government announced closure of the road two weeks after the Dopemu and Iyana-Ipaja bridges were shut for a period of ten days each due to on-going maintenance works.
