The National Commission on Museums and Monuments last week announced that during its 12th edition of the Children Day celebration this year, it will host 800 students from across primary and secondary schools in Lagos.
Mr. Emmanuel Omotosho, the Head of the Education Department of the commission, disclosed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.
Mr. Omotosho said that although the commission had not decided on the theme of 2014’s celebration, the programme, billed to take place on May 27th
, was aimed at promoting Nigerian cultural values among the youths.
According to Omotosho, a large number of youths from primary and secondary schools are the target group.
He said that there would be competitions and fun activities relating to cooking, painting, match past, art works and braiding at the event.
Omotosho said that this year’s celebration would be “fun-filled, educative and entertaining”, while the youths would be enlightened on the country’s rich cultures.
“The country is blessed with so many rich traditions, cultures and norms that the children need to know and be enlightened about.” he said.
Omotosho advised parents, teachers and students to visit museums to educate themselves about rich African culture and heritage.
“A Museum is a place where cultural heritage, scriptures, artifacts and collections of the olden days are kept for research and other purposes,” he said.
Omotosho also urged NGOs, stakeholders, investors and corporate organisations to support the growth of African culture and its heritage.
