Kunle Afolayan is working on a movie, titled Mokalik (A Yoruba way of saying “mechanic”) and shooting will be commencing soon. Afolayan will be building the story of the movie around a scene from his late father, Adeyemi Afolayan’s, popular 1983 film Taxi Driver. The original movie was about a taxi driver who, while raising his only son after his wife leaves him, falls in love with a young lady whom he meets in the most unusual of circumstances. The Afolayan patriarch, popularly called “Ade Love” was an actor, director and producer with a number of popular films in the 70s and 80to his credit, including Kadara and Ajani Ogun.

Mokalik Synopsis

The movie follows the life Jaiye, an 11-year-old boy from a middle-class family, who is made to serve as a mechanic apprentice after he failed his school leaving examination. His father, not minding Jaiye’s displeasure, hands him over to the local chairman to commence his apprenticeship. Even though he feels like fish out of water, Jaiye still has to work and learn under different mechanics, some of whom he gets along with well, and other whom he would rather not work with. Surprisingly, Jaiye, although in the midst of fights, thefts, and even a pregnancy scandal at the garage, he begins to feel at home with the job and everything that comes with it and eventually gets caught between completing his education and following his newfound vocation. During this time, he meets and falls in love with Simi; a 21-year-old woman. The shooting of Mokalik begins on the 27th of August and will be captured in a typical mechanic workshop.
