Since they thrilled the boxing heavyweight world with their memorable fight on December 1, 2018, boxing fans around the world have been itching for a rematch between heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder and Tyson Fury.

Wilder, who currently holds the World Boxing Council (WBC) title, sent Fury hitting the canvas twice in the 12-round encounter. However, the latter’s peerless skill and resilience earned him the vote of the boxing world.

The fight was decided as a draw, leaving Wilder to keep the WBC title, while Fury justified his right to return to the big-boys-table in world boxing heavyweight.

Seeing that fans and stakeholders of the game want another big boxing showdown between the two heavyweights, the WBC had no choice but to sanction a “direct rematch”.

In a statement issued by the World Boxing Council, the board of governors held a voting process which resulted in a unanimous decision to approve a direct rematch between the ‘Bronze Bomber’ and the ‘Gypsy King’.

“Wilder and Fury gave boxing one of the best fights in the heavyweight division in a long time, which has created tremendous popular demand for the fans to see a rematch. The WBC is happy to confirm that a direct rematch has been approved and will create in a ruling which will also consider the mandatory status of the division.

“I wish to once again congratulate Deontay Wilder and Tyson Fury for their great battle inside the ring and for the exemplary sportsmanship after the bout.”

All that remains is for both boxers to agree on a deal and set a date for the next big battle in world boxing.

Possible Bout With Joshua

Now that there is a chance that Fury could emerge the next WBC champion, the British boxer has opened talks with Matchroom boxing promoter, Eddie Hearn, on a possible all-English bout with the unified world heavyweight champion, Anthony Joshua.

Joshua currently holds three (World Boxing Association, International Boxing federation, World Boxing Organisation) out of four major world heavyweight titles, and will be looking forward to an undisputed battle with the WBC champion, whomever it is.

Eddie Hearn acknowledged that Fury made a call through to him and both men have begun talks on a future fight. However, for now nothing is certain and Joshua may yet face a different opponent come April 13, 2019.
