The leadership of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has appointed Portuguese coach Jose Peseiro to become the new national team handler. The Nigerian football ruling body sacked Gernot Rohr on December 12, 2021, and named ex-international Augustine Eguavoen as the interim coach of the three-time African champions.Read more about Sports
With barely 11 days left until the commencement of the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon, the NFF on the eve of Wednesday, December 29, 2021, confirmed the appointment of the former FC Porto coach via a memo:
“After careful consideration of a memo presented by Chairman of the Technical and Development Sub-Committee Ahmed Yusuf Fresh, the Executive Committee endorsed a proposal for the appointment of Mr Jose Peseiro as the new Head Coach of the Super Eagles,’’the memo read. The memo also revealed that Eguavoen will retain his role as the interim coach of the Super Eagles until the 2022 AFCON is over, while Peseiro will work closely with him in Cameroon. Eguavoen will return to his role as the Technical Director of the national team after the tournament.

“However, the Committee resolved that Mr Augustine Eguavoen named the interim Head Coach, will lead the Super Eagles to the AFCON 2021 in Cameroon with Mr Peseiro only playing the role of Observer. “It was unanimously agreed that the AFCON is a good avenue for Mr Peseiro to launch a working relationship with Mr Eguavoen, who will revert to his role as Technical Director (hence Mr Peseiro’s immediate boss) after the AFCON.’’ NFFPeseiro has managed Portuguese top-flight clubs such as FC Porto, Sporting Lisbon, and Braga in the past. He also handled the Venezuelan national team where he left, over unpaid wages. The first task of the Portuguese tactician will be to qualify Nigeria for the 2022 World Cup.
