Reacting to the development, JAMB Registrar, Professor Ishaq Oloyede, said it was part of measures put in place by JAMB to simplify the 2021 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) registration process. The USSD code which launched on Friday, April 30th, 2021, would assist candidates in obtaining their codes by simply dialling *55019*1*NIN#.
‘We came together as a team to proffer solution by creating a USSD code which will start functioning from Friday, April 30. The USSD code would be available to students who are yet to send their NIN number to the number requested; they can send the USSD code which consists of *55019*1*NIN# and then get the Pin needed for further registration.’ Professor Ishaq Oloyede
The JAMB boss went further to reveal that prior to the launch of the USSD, registration was seamless. However, he attributed errors encountered in the registration process to parents and candidates and revealed that he had to troubleshoot some issues for candidates when he visited some registration centres in Lagos. Prof. Ishaq also said that a N50.00 charge was attached for candidates to obtain their codes after they must have sent their NIN as SMS to 55019.

On the challenges associated with the process, Oloyede disclosed that a lot of students received error messages because they did not have airtime or they failed to insert the NIN with the required spacing between the numbers
‘Some of the students didn’t know that after you have sent the code with a number at first then the number would be registered. So if he or she attempts another number it won’t go unless they resolve the issues with the number and then attempt again with the registered number. The Pin will then be generated for the registration process.’ Oloyede
He went further to disclose the solution:
‘We have an open ticket on www.jamb.com so the student could also check for the reasons why the NIN number isn’t been processed with their phone. If there are problems we will know because we are also receiving the company of the process on the database of the JAMB.’ Oloyede
Prof. Oloyede advised parents to allow their children to do the registration themselves because they cause errors by filling in the wrong details.
‘Many parents input the wrong data on behalf of their ward then claimed the process was not working, while on the contrary candidates were registering successfully on a daily basis.’ Oloyede
