Celebrities are known to have a huge influence on fashion trends. Followers aspire to be like their role models and with thousands of these stars on the media, it isn’t a surprise, after all, to see new styles burst forth after notable events.
One trend we should be on the lookout for is the faux fur.
There was an ostensible display of the fabric across the shoulders of quite a number of celebrities at the premiere of the Cold Feet movie. Held on May 12 at the Intercontinental Hotel Lagos, the red carpet event featured both male and female guests spotting the material.
In an era where the internet greatly influences globalization, Western cultures still saturate the African lifestyle. In keeping up with the premiere’s Great Gatsby dressing theme – based on the 1925 novel by American author, Scott Fitzgerald – attendees were clad in 1920s American socialite fashion. Generally, the party was in rich vintage style: classically glamorous ladies in sequined dresses and high-slit gowns and men in fitting suits, along with accessories like hats, gloves, feathers and the exceptional fur.
Though they were also worn to keep warm, fur dresses were a symbol of status in the early and mid-20th century. In fact, along with jewellery, they were used as items for insurance. In the 1980s and 90s, the use of fake fur was advocated to meet growing fashion demands without the downsides of animal brutality and extinction.
Today, faux fur accessories like stoles and coats transcend both weather and status. Most likely, it is the oomph it adds to an outfit that has kept it in and out of seasons. With no less than ten guests spotted in faux fur at the Cold Feet premiere, this statement either spells a passing fad or fashion that has come to stay in Nigeria.
