Nigeria’s has achieved the highest internet speed in Africa, so says a report by Akamai Technologies Global Internet Platform. The report placed Nigeria as the highest, leaving former No. 1, South Africa, at second place. It says Nigeria has an average connection speed of 322 kilobytes per second with a peak rate of 5674kbps, scaling South Africa’s peak rate of 2172kbps, by more than double – albeit its average connection speed of 496kbps is higher. Nigeria, with the introduction of optic fibre cables and deployment of its SAT-1 technology, has seen a boost in internet speed in recent years. However, internet service provision and speed is still grim, with streaming of online contents and downloads, taking longer than supposed. This news of our improvement over South Africa, is indicative of development, but until connection speed improves across the board, the achievement will remain a report.
