There are indications that the rumbles which the ruling political party has been facing may have escalated following comments by former All Progressives Congress (APC) National Chairman, Chief Bisi Akande, at his party registration in Ila-Orangun, Osun State.

The rumbles began when the make-shift National leadership of the party led by Mr Mai Mala Buni, Governor of Yobe State called for all party leadership structure to be dissolved nationwide. Not long after, this fresh member registration drive was launched. This meant that all the state executive bodies which several caucus or leaders within the party structure had been supporting were all gone overnight. No political liege lord would like a political structure which they have funded and benefitted from to be scrapped without notice. Also effectively, the caretaker committee now has more powers to unilaterally decide on some party affairs without having to consult with the APC’s National Executive Council. This was what Chief Bisi Akande was alluding to when he condemned the current membership and revalidation exercise and the so-called party leadership. Speaking shortly after he was registered by the party delegation led by Senator Lawan Suiab at his Ward 04, Unit 012, Isedo1, Ila-Orangun, Osun State on Wednesday, 3 February, he stated:

“… a Caretaker Executive Committee for a political party is an abnormality. If not carefully controlled and expeditiously managed, most aberrant authorities end up in contempt and disgrace…I want to urge the present APC Caretaker Executive Committee to resist all temptations of sit-tight syndromes that usually characterize most handpicked authorities in most underdeveloped countries of the world. “I see the present APC membership registration within less than a decade after the original register as an indefensible aberration leading to certain ugly perceptions.”
It is also worth noting that Akande condemned the wastefulness designed into the new flamboyant registration. He noted that the first member registration done in 2014 was done with over N1billion and that it is not right to spend such a huge amount of money on similar exercise at this time of global economic crisis. All of these dynamics play into the intention and machinations by Bola Tinubu to contest the 2023 presidential elections. With the current unstructured party leadership, laying the foundations for a Tinubu presidency would naturally become more arduous. Tinubu would have no influence over the national party leadership and there would be no state political structure to fall back on too. Therefore, the alarm being raised by Akande is to anticipate the other troubles which lie in wait for the party as the 2023 political season approaches fast. Accompanied by other APC figures from Osun state such as the State Governor, Adegboyega Oyetola; his deputy, Gboyega Alani; Speaker of the House, Timothy Owoeye; Chief of Staff to the Governor; Diji Ajibola, former deputy governor; Titilayo Laoye Ponle; Senators representing Osun Central and Osun West, Ajibola Basiru and Lere Oriolowo and the Chairman of Osun APC, Gboyega Famodun, it can be deduced that this is also the position which the acclaimed National Leader of the APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu has taken, as a result, Bisi Akande might have just spoken Tinubu’s mind.
