  As the Continuous Voters Registration (CVR) exercise continues, Nigeria’s electoral body, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has disclosed that a total of 430,363 new Nigerian voters have completed registration for their permanent voter card (PVC) as preparations for the 2023 general elections continues.

It will be recalled that INEC on June 28th, 2021, launched an online registration portal for Nigerians interested in obtaining their voter’s card, ahead of the physical registration process which kicked off on July 26th, 2021. In an update on Monday, August 23rd, 2021, INEC revealed that over 2.2 million Nigerians have done the online pre-registration process since June 2021. However, the commission disclosed that only 174,775 (7.9%) of online applicants have proceeded to complete the in-person registration which is currently ongoing at the agency’s offices in States and local governments. Meanwhile, 255,588 fully registered new voters applied at physical locations offline. Of all Nigeria’s 36 states and the capital, Abuja, Anambra State which is preparing for its gubernatorial election this year, has the highest number of newly registered voters with a total of 30,376, followed by Osun State, 26,775. Osun also boasts the highest number of applicants online with 365,412.

A total of 308,503 of the new voters are youth within the ages of 18 and 34 years, followed by the middle-aged new voters (35-49 years), with a total of 80,030. Figures published by INEC also revealed that of the newly registered voters, 234,561 are male, while 195,802 are female.

INEC is expected to end the Continuous Voters Registration (CVR) exercise in June 2022, few months ahead of the general elections in 2023. Asides from citizens looking to obtain their PVCs, the exercise is also open to those who want to transfer voting location, correct data issues, or replace lost/damaged PVC. Of the estimated over 200 million Nigerians, the country currently boasts over 84 million registered voters as INEC targets at least 20 million new registrants.
