Are you a young person entering the job market? Are you currently employed but seeking a career shift? If yes, this article is a must-read for you.
We all want that perfect career that keeps us happy, secure and fulfilled, but deciding what path to take – that’s the tough part. Here are four points to consider in making your very important decision:
1. Understand the true definition of success: Society’s definition of success – money, power and fame – is undeniably far away from the truth. Quite frankly, these are the same elements on which our corrupt nation has been built. We are truly successful when we are able to impact lives, organizations and communities through a job role that has been given to us. It’s all about adding value, causing change and producing results that affect people other than ourselves alone. As you do so, be assured that value will always find its way back to you.
2. Discover yourself: It’s a known fact that every journey begins with a step. When it comes to choosing the perfect career, self-discovery is that step you must not overlook. Take time out to find out who you (truly) are, where your passions lie and how best you work. There’s no point being an accountant if you hate Maths, and it’s illogical to become a doctor if you can’t be around the sick. Accept these inclinations as your own and work with them in choosing a fulfilling career path.
3. Discover your purpose: The late Dr. Myles Munroe once made a remarkable statement: “When the purpose of a thing is not known, abuse is inevitable.” His point is something to take to heart. Spend time with the One who made you to find out what you were made to do. The weeks, months or even years you invest at this stage will save you from potential heartache and feelings of discontentment decades later.
4. Do your research: Some careers seem rosy on the outside but are complete nightmares when we practice them. This is why it’s important to thoroughly research our career prospects. Ask professionals in the field what their work life is like, or speak to a qualified career counselor about your ideas. You will be surprised at how much knowledge you’re able to dig up when you put your mind to it.
