It is common knowledge today that users of cell phones (mobile phones) are at risk of unhealthy disadvantages and this therefore raises the question: how do we manage the risks and keep using our cell phones? First of all, I would like to enlighten some of us who are seeing this for the first time or are not well acquainted with this issue. Cell phones work with electromagnetic radiations which are not scientifically proven to be unsafe or to have no long term effects but are being quoted by the International Agency for Research on Cancer, IARC to be a “possible human carcinogen” – carcinogens are cancer causing agents. They are other researches that make it necessary for scientists to recommend safe usage for cell phone users. Here are some cell phone usage guidelines to be conscious about: 1. Children under the age of 10 should be guided cautiously against the use of cell phones as their brain’s protective barrier still has a high absorption rate unlike adult skulls. Older children should use headsets. 2. Try using a headset or the speaker phones often when talking on the phone. This is most advisable for those in the customer care business and those whose daily activity or office activity revolve around phones. It isn’t good to hold a high electromagnetic radiation device close to your head for long periods. 3. Pregnant women should keep cell phones away from their abdomen to ensure the good health of their unborn babies. 4. Men – who wish to have children – will greatly improve their reproductive chances if they will simply avoid leaving phones on in their pockets. This has been associated with low sperm count in some research investigations (Davoudi, 2002). 5. Women should avoid storing phones in their breast pocket or bra because radiations have an ability to interfere with DNA repairs and it has effects on soft tissues. 6. Have short conversations if possible. Preferably, send an SMS or chat rather than make calls. Also, preferably use landlines or call people on their landlines instead of on their cell phones. Watch your cell phone usage. Be safe!   About the Writer: Bello Muhammad is a graduate of Biological Sciences. He is passionate about education and personal development.
