Last week, we discussed
“When to Tuck in Your Shirt” but in the quest to look smart and formal, some of us make elementary mistakes while tucking in our shirts. Here are 4 ways not to tuck in your shirt:
1. NEVER IN YOUR UNDERWEAR
I have seen some guys who tuck in their shirts into their inner pants or boxer shorts; this is very wrong. Don’t tuck your shirt into your underwear because that ‘innocent’ mistake can lead to a humiliating situation of having the top of your underwear show over the waist of your pants. When your shirt is firmly tucked into your underwear, any sort of motion like bending and twisting that would normally pull some of the shirt-tail material out of your pants can cause your underwear to ride up. If it gets too high, the result can be seriously embarrassing especially if your underwear is not in a top shape – and even if it is, never tuck your shirt into your underwear.
Some people argue that they like tucking their undershirt into their underwear because it keeps their actual dress shirt from becoming un-tucked easily; but at what cost? Having the rest of us view your underwear?
2. ALWAYS WEAR A BELT
It is not advisable to tuck in your shirt without a belt. Always wear a belt when you wear a tucked-in shirt, even if you don’t need it to keep your pants up. Dress shirts are generally meant to be worn with belts – and look most professional when paired with them. Leaving a belt off can make the waistline look somewhat naked and exposed, especially when you’re wearing a shirt that contrasts greatly with the colour of your pants. Opinions are split on this though as some people see this as some form of fashion. But my candid opinion is: if you really don’t want to wear a belt while your shirt is tucked in; use suspenders and side-tabs. They accomplish the same purpose of keeping your pants up.
3. STAY TUCKED IN
Until you are done for the day and headed home or to a bar to share a couple of drinks with friends, do not un-tuck after having your shirt tucked in. Once you make the decision to tuck your shirt in for the day, don’t turn back until the day is over. Tucking your shirt in ruffles the material at the bottom of the shirt as it’s stuffed into your trousers and as soon as you un-tuck your shirt, these wrinkles become visible. These can be quite visually unappealing, especially on light coloured shirts, so keep your shirt tucked in until you are done for the day.
4. THE HALF TUCK IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH
If you’re going to tuck in your shirt, tuck it all the way in. Don’t stop halfway through. Tucking your shirt in completely in the back but leaving one of the front shirt-tails deliberately un-tucked won’t make you look “convention-defying”, instead, it will make you look like you have forgotten to tuck it in properly or you’re trying to get attention. So, unless you’re a teen on his way to a school after-party or you truly want to stand out at the cost of looking less put-together; stay away from the half-tuck – it is not good enough.
