Nigeria’s ace female wrestlers dominated the Olympic Wrestling African and Oceania qualification tournament in Algiers, to qualify for the 2016 Rio Olympics.
African Champions, Blessing Oborodudu, Aminat Adeniyi, Genesis Mercy, and Hannah Reuben, all qualified for the monumental event after each wrestler made it to the finals in their weight class.
According to the qualification criteria, the top two wrestlers in each weight class automatically earned a qualification to the Olympic games in Rio, Brazil.
For Oborodudu, it was an all out massacre as the Nigerian utterly defeated Algeria’s Amina Benabderrahmane, in the 63kg women’s freestyle. Oborodudu ended Amina’s run at the tournament with a 10-0 defeat to book a slot in the finals.
In the 69kg event, Nigeria’s super woman, Reuben, sent another Algerian home with a disgraceful defeat.
Reuben defeated Houria Boukrif, 10-0, to also book her spot in the final event.
Mercy who competed in the 48kg event also won her opponent and qualified for the final event.
Team Nigeria came close to clinching an all-out win at the semi-final rounds, however, Blessing Onyebuchi, could not overpower her opponent in her fight.
Blessing took on Cameroon’s Annabelle Ali in the 75kg weight class, but narrowly missed her chance to represent Nigeria at the Olympics when Ali usurped control of the fight and ended the Nigerian’s campaign with a 4-3 defeat.
