On Saturday, June 7, 2014, the Super Falcons of Nigeria completed a straight double win against the She-Amavubi of Rwanda, in their quest to secure a place in the 2014 African Women’s Championship (AWC).

The match which took place at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium in Kaduna, was a riveting display of the playing prowess and dominating spirit of the Nigeria senior women’s football team.

The Falcons entered the game with a 3 goal away advantage over the Grace Nyinawumuntu led side, following Nigeria’s 4-1 win in the first leg of their AWC qualifier in Gisenyi.

With the second leg looking like a mere formality, it would have been totally normal if the Falcons had just stalled the Rwandan team from scoring any goals till the final whistle.

However, the Nigerian team chose to instead throw the She-Amavubi into a quandary.

Play by play

Blessing Edoho began Nigeria’s onslaught 12 minutes into the game, with Asisat Oshoala doubling the lead within 21 minutes of the encounter.

Desire Oparanozie scored her first goal of the game in the 24th minute, before adding another goal 7 minutes later, to give Nigeria a 4 goal lead with just 31 minutes on the clock.

With 4 minutes left till halftime, Esther Sunday added Nigeria’s fifth goal of the game, ending the half at 5-0.

Ten minutes into the restart, Oparanozie completed her hat trick to bring the scores 6-0. It was only after the Nigerian team had fully spelt R-W-A-N-D-A that the She-Amavubi rallied back into the game. Their last minute fight, however, was not enough to hold the Falcons from adding two extra letters to their country’s already spelt name.

Oshoala bagged another goal in the 82nd minute, while Cecilia Nku ended Rwanda’s run with a superb finisher in the 89th minute.

The incredible match wrapped up at 8-0 at full time.
