Nigerian professionals such as Mikel Obi, Taye Taiwo, Kelechi Iheanacho, and more, at some point, featured for the Flying Eagles at the World Cup. During the 2009 edition of the FIFA U-20 World Cup, Samson Siasia led Flying Eagles were drawn in Group B alongside Venezuela, Spain, and Tahiti. A 1-0 loss to Venezuela in their opening game and a 2-0 loss to Spain in their second game meant the Nigerian side needed to score a lot of goals in their last group game against Tahiti to stand a chance of qualifying for the next round as one of the best losers. On Thursday, October 1, 2009, Nigeria filed out against Tahiti at the 63,674 capacity Cairo International Stadium, Cairo, in a bid to book their place in the next round. A 15th-minute strike from Obiora Nwankwo gifted Nigeria the lead.

Ibok Edet would make it 2-0 in the 24th minute as the Flying Eagles continued their quest to score a lot of goals and earn a best losers spot. Kehinde Fatai made it 3-0 in the 34th minute, and Nurudeen Orelesi extended the lead in the 45th minute to end the first half 4-0. With the scores left at 4-0, all Daniel Udejo probably had in mind was to help the team win the game and score as many goals as possible before the referee blew the final whistle. Fortunately, Udejo’s name would go on to become prominent in the history of the tournament owing to his 90th-minute strike of the game, which saw the game end at 5-0, earning Nigeria a qualification spot in the next round. Udejo’s goal is on recorded as the 1,800th goal in the history of the tournament Sources Sports Village Square Goal Wikipedia Featured Image Source: Sky Sports
