On Monday, July 28, 2014, Okagbare in a time of 10.85 seconds won the 100m race to clinch Gold for Nigeria and claimed a double (won two Gold medals) at the global showpiece after winning the 200m race on Thursday, July 31, 2014, with a time of 22.25 seconds. The interesting thing about her 100m win was that she set a Commonwealth Games record with her time. Okagbare’s 200m win did not come rosy as she faced stiff competition from Jodie Williams and Bianca Williams (both from England). Both athletes in a bid to beat Okagbare ran their personal best in the 200m final but the Nigerian won the race and was still unsatisfied with the 22.25 seconds time.

Only a few athletes will win a race and still be a little unhappy because they failed to beat their personal best, but Okagbare is a rare gem, undoubtedly one of the greatest in African athletics history. Read what she said after the win below:
‘It’s amazing. I feel extremely blessed, it’s not easy to get a medal so it is something to celebrate…I wanted to run faster, honestly. I went out in the final and I did not celebrate like I did in the 100 because I saw the time and was a little disappointed. I had to balance the weather and two runs in the 200 is just really, really hard. I don’t know why they did that schedule. If we had another extra day of 24 hours rest and came back then I would have been able to run faster because I think I’m actually ready to do under 22 seconds.’ Blessing Okagbare
