Stephen Keshi stunned the Nigerian populace yesterday when he resigned a day after leading the Super Eagles to their first African Cup of Nations title in 19 years.
Keshi confirmed on South Africa’s Metro FM that he has handed in his resignation after Sunday’s victory.
Keshi said on air that his resignation was because the Nigerian Football Federation had no faith in him and threatened to fire him prior to the Quarter final clash against Ivory Coast on February 3.
“I gave them (Nigeria Football Federation) my letter of resignation immediately after last night’s game, but I haven’t heard from them yet.” Keshi said
SuperSports analyst and former Super Eagles goalkeeper, Peterside Idah, confirmed Keshi’s resignation via his Twitter handle.
Idah tweeted, “Yes, he told me so, he would resign on Saturday, spent some time with him. Will give you reasons why he quit tomorrow.”
“Keshi only heard the NFF had given the secretary money for return tickets before Ivory Coast game only after they won the game.” He also tweeted
It was reported that the members of the NFF went into an emergency meeting on Monday to resolve the issue.
Super Eagles spokesman Ben Alaiya told the AP late Monday that he didn’t know if Keshi had resigned.
“I have not been able to talk to him and I have not spoken to the leadership to have information on what is really happening,” Alaiya said.
The Nigerian Football Federation are yet to accept Keshi’s resignation and it isn’t clear whether they will try to settle with the angry coach away from the prying eyes of the media or accept his resignation.
Apart from his car and salary, the Eagles coach was said to have complained bitterly of not getting the cash due him in South Africa during the Nations Cup. He also complained that his players were being owed a lot of money as the promises were more on the pages of the newspapers than being fulfilled.
Some indigenous coaches have already applied for the Super Eagles job.
