Thinking of how to indulge your senses this weekend? Think healthy. With oranges, pineapples and watermelons hitting the markets and calling out on roadsides at very affordable prices because of the season, it is time you make yourself some cups of juices.
As a rule, the equipment and environment for preparing juices must be clean.
- Orange juice: This tops the list as the most popular juice made this season. Orange juice is pretty easy to make with or without a juicer. All you have to do is to get as many oranges as you will like to juice, wash them, peel them and then squeeze as much as possible of each orange into a bowl. When you have the required amount you need, get a sieve with small pores and pour the juice into it, then allow it to drain. Discard the seeds, each the concentrates and leave your fresh orange juice to chill. You can chill by adding ice or refrigerating.
- Pineapple juice: It can be made by simply peeling the pineapples, removing the ‘eyes’ (the black spots on the edible flesh) and the core (the thick part at the centre of the fruit) and cutting them into smaller sizes. You can use a juicer or blender, or if you don’t have one, you would have to pulp it manually to release the juice. If you are going to use a blender, add a little water during the blending process, and drain afterwards, else, you will end up making a smoothie, which is also a nice idea. A juicer is designed to do the whole juicing for you. If you will be preparing it manually, simply mash into tiny bits and place in a sieve and over a container to collect the juice. It is best consumed chilled.
- Watermelon juice: To prepare, wash first, then dice the soft red inner flesh watermelon into small sizes, excluding the outer green back. The soft inner flesh is then mashed with a grater, or juicer to bring out more juice. It is drained to remove shaft and seeds. Best served chilled.
