Nigeria’s U-20 football team, the Flying Eagles kicked off their African Youth Championship campaign with a comfortable 3-1 win over host, Senegal at the Stade Leopold Senghor on Sunday night.
Taiwo Awoniyi put in a man-of-the-match display with two well-taken goals and opened the scoring in the tenth minute after connecting to a long pass from the back.
He doubled Nigeria’s lead three minutes later, beating Seydou of the Senegal team to the ball before wrong footing a defender and slotting the ball into the net.
Senegal grabbed one back through Sidy Sarr who capitalised on a mix up in the 18-yard area, before firing a low shot past Joshua Enaholo into the net.
Ifeanyi Matthew put the game to bed with his side’s third goal just before half time.
Nigeria will take on Congo in their fixture on 11th March at the Stade Leopold Senghor before lining up against Ivory Coast on 14th March in the final Group A fixture at the Stade Caroline Faye.
