Nigeria’s U-20 women’s national team, the Falconets, will be flying back home with their feathers clipped after suffering a 2-1 defeat at the hands of the Spaniards in France on Thursday.
The match, which was to determine which team would make it into the semifinal round of the competition saw, Spain dominate the Falconets from the early minutes of the first half into the second half and still maintained their lead till the final whistle, ending Nigeria’s World Cup run.
Spain started the game on their best foot as team captain, Aitana Bonmati gave her side the lead in the 13th minute via a shot from outside the box.
The Falconets almost went two goals behind when a free-kick taken by Bonmati appeared to have crossed the line after it hit the crossbar. However, the referee did not give it.
In the extra minutes of the first half, Spain went two goals up following a precise strike by Patricia Guijarro.
Nigeria fought back with a goal by Peace Ewomazino Efih in the 57th minute, however, the effort was just not enough to stop the Spaniards who were even more determined to maintain their place in the game.
Spain will now take on France in the semifinal round for a spot in the final showdown.
