Global basketball ruling body, the Federation of International Basketball Association, FIBA, in conjunction with Basketball Federations of different countries has finalised plans to organise online certification courses for coaches and referees around the world. As the world continues to battle the corona virus pandemic, FIBA in its quest to avoid physical interactions moved the training online. While training for coaches commence on May 11, 2020, referees will join the training on May 18, 2020, as FIBA reorganises the 2021 calendar.

For Level 1 candidates (Coaches and National Referees) of the FIBA World Association of Basketball Coaches, registration has already started through the Nigeria Basketball Federation Secretariat and will end on Wednesday, May 6th, 2020. Commenting on the development, the NBBF noted that the online training is inclusive of 4 modules which would last for a week, while practical additional courses will be moved to a date when physical activities around the world resumes.
For upcoming referees aged between 21 and 31, the training format will be the same, while the Secretary General of the NBBF will forward list of successful candidates to FIBA.

To be eligible for the training, intending referees must
- Have an internet enabled laptop or tablet.
- Have more than five years of referee experience.
- Be officiating at the highest league in the country for at least two years.
Additional qualifications includes possessing:
- Official Basketball Rules(OBR)
- Official Basketball Rules Interpretation (OBRI)
- Internet of Things (IOT)
