Subscribers who already have a NIN have until January 19, 2021, as the deadline to link it up with their SIM registration records, while subscribers without a NIN have until February 9, 2020, to get it and update their SIM registration record to avoid their SIM cards being blocked. Further, the National Task Force on NIN and SIM Registration also maintained that charges (USSD and verification charges) accompanying the link-up must remain suspended for the period given. It will be recalled that the House of Representatives, following the order of NCC last week, passed a resolution for the deadline to be extended. The NIN which is issued by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) once an individual enrols into the National Identity Database, and is equally useful for capturing the records of individuals, has seen large crowds gather at NIMC centres since the directive from the NCC, and there are fears it could escalate the spread of the second wave of COVID-19 in Nigeria.
