In a bid to further enrich their surrounding community with a means aside the daily distribution of gas and oil services, Falcon Petroleum Limited, has put together a skill acquisition program aimed at empowering the women of Ikorodu, Lagos. This move lays weight to its claim of being a socially responsible corporate citizen, and is another way to ensure consistent engagement with their host community, in full appreciation of the peaceable tenancy which the Ikorodu neighbourhood has allowed to the company.
The program consists of providing the opportunity for women to learn self-developing skills such as catering, bead making and event planning. Forty-eight women selected would undergo a three month intensive training in the vocations stated above, and in completion, would then be enrolled in an industrial training institution for a month, in order to ensure a strong economic footing. The company also promises to provide a one year mentoring program for the women involved, and at the end of the training, a start-up package to boost their entrepreneurship.
At the opening ceremony of the initiative, Joseph Ezigbo, the company’s managing director said “with the clear understanding that when you train a woman, you train a nation, we have partnered with our host community to design a vocational skills acquisition program to benefit selected women from the communities.”
This is highly commendable. Think what Nigeria would be if all major companies participated in giving back to their neighbouring communities.
