Do you remember Agbani Darego, the first and only African woman to win Miss World modelling title. Such a feat! Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria(MBGN) was the modelling platform her dreams were realized and she is one of the numerous women that have benefited from the show.
History of MBGN
Ben Murray-Bruce was the pioneer of MBGN, formely known as Miss Universe Nigeria under the management of Silverbird. The show officially started in 1983 with Omololu Ojehomon as the first winner of the show. Back then, the winners could not contest in International modelling competitions, hence it was revamped to MBGN in 1986.
MBGN winners were to represent Nigeria at Miss world and hereafter, Miss Universe from 2004. The winners of the show are to keep their titles for a year before conferring it on the next winner. In case the winners resign or don’t finish their tenure, the second-place winners are to continue in their stead.
The winners must adopt a platform known as Pet project. The platform is to address an issue facing Nigeria. It can be children education, Polio, Sickle cell Awareness, etc.
From 2007, the show produced four more representatives aside the winner. They are: Miss MBGN Universe, MBGN Tourism, and MBGN Ecowas. There is also MBGN Ambassador. Its winners don’t participate in International competitions but they perform ceremonial model duties in Nigeria.
Differences between MBGN and Miss Nigeria.
1.MBGN winners compete at international modelling competitions while Miss Nigeria winners don’t.
2.MBGN focuses more on physical beauty while Miss Nigeria focuses more on inner beauty.
