Super Eagles of Nigeria goalkeeper and captain, Vincent Enyeama has been named the Goal Nigeria Player of the Year 2014.
Enyeama, who bagged the Ligue 1 Goalkeeper of the Year award at the weekend, garnered 55% of the votes cast between December 1-5, 2014 from readers of the football website.
The Lille Metropole of France shot stopper finished above compatriots Ahmed Musa, Obafemi Martins, Mfon Udoh and Ikechukwu Uche, to become only the second player to win the award following John Obi Mikel’s dominance in the past two years. An elated Enyeama accepted the award at his club in France on Monday morning and expressed his gratitude to everyone that voted for him. “I’m happy, really happy,” he enthused. “I want to thank my teammates at Lille, the Nigeria national team, my coaches, my wife, my fans, everybody who voted for me, who scream for me during matches to encourage me. And the journalists, without which nothing will be possible.”
Enyeama also insisted this is only the starting point for him and revealed his ambition to be the best goalkeeper in the world. “I think it’s really hard for a goalkeeper to be recognized. I want to say to all the other goalkeepers that they have to work hard. If they work hard, with God, everything is possible. I want to win every match. Every day, I give my best to be better than yesterday. My target [is] to be the best goalkeeper in the world. This is my dream, and I’m working hard for this,” he said. Enyeama will be hoping to make it a hat trick of awards when he goes head to head with reigning African player of the year, Yaya Toure of Ivory Coast and Pierre-Emerick Aubemanyang of Gabon for the CAF player of the year award in Lagos on Thursday.
