Engineering Happiness with Doctors: Where Science Ends; Spirituality Begins!
Dr. Arun Bhardwaj (B.Tech; MBA; PhD)
Thanks to one of my doctor friends, I had an opportunity to share my Engineering Happiness program with a team of bright young doctors and their families recently. It was late night, yet they were very enthusiastic to know another point of view on life. My request to them was to take a human centric approach to medicine because they are not treating just a disease but healing a human being. I feel there is a need for creating a harmony between purely clinical approach to medicine and a compassion oriented approach.
My moment of test came when one of the young doctors, a haematologist (a specialist in the science or study of blood, blood-forming organs and blood diseases) in a reputed hospital, came to me and asked me how should he break news of a incurable blood cancer to a patient or the patient’s family? He had joined medicine with the passion to revive the human centred approach; but such interactions were causing severe mental agony and stress to him. What would be your response to his question ?
I believe where the science ends, the spirituality begins. I believe for the life to thrive in the toughest of circumstances – HOPE (of a miracle by the creative intelligence) need to stay alive. I have met patients who were left with two weeks as per scientific analysis; yet are living for more than two years. I have profound respect for modern medicine and science in general. Yet based on my experiences and first hand interactions with others, I have come to believe in Miracles. I believe that creative intelligence has miraculous powers that are still outside of the current human sphere of knowledge. When known science reaches its outer edge; we should suggest / deploy alternatives that are empirically proven to kindle a ray of hope.
We have control over eating food; yet digestion is upto the nature. Doctors can prescribe the best medicine; yet the Nature plays an important part in responding to those medicines and healing. I hope integrated medicine will gain more acceptance in the world (especially in India – the birth place of Ayurveda / Yoga / Spirituality) so that modern medicine, spirituality and alternative medicine can contribute their best in harmony to make this world a joyful place to live.
I believe that both science and faith have important role to play to keep a patient’s hope of healing alive. I hope to play my role in inspiring “Will to Heal” in those going through their rough patch in life.
