Super Eagles of Nigeria central back, William Troost-Ekong, fully resumed training on Wednesday, March 9, after a minor groin problem which raised fears that he could miss the all-important two-legged 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifier against the Black Stars of Ghana.Ekong’s return was confirmed by Watford on their official website.
It will be recalled that prior to Watford’s league game against Arsenal on Sunday, March 6, the Hornets’ manager Roy Hodgson told the press that the Super Eagles of Nigeria vice captain was down injured and would not be available “for the foreseeable future,’’ but the latest post from the English Premier League side has confirmed the defender is back in action.
“William Troost-Ekong makes his return to full training today following a minor groin problem, but tomorrow’s Molineux encounter is likely to come too soon for the Nigeria captain,’’
the club statement read.
Ekong’s return is timely for the Augustine Eguavoen–led Super Eagles side as preparations continue for the World Cup qualifiers playoff against Ghana in Cape Coast on March 25, 2022, and the return leg at the Moshood Abiola Stadium, Abuja on March 29. Aggregate winner of both ties will book a ticket for the global showpiece in Asia later this year.Ekong turned out brilliantly for the three-time African champions during the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon despite the team crashing out in the second round to a 1-0 defeat against Tunisia. Egauvoen will be banking on his vice captain in the Eagles defense to get the job done against Ghana.
