Last weekend Nigeria witnessed the kind of football similar to that of the glory days; entertaining, exciting, flamboyance most notably, the type which our soccer team have failed to deliver since ‘the class of 94’.
The AFCON Qualifier match between the Super Eagles Of Nigeria and the Liberian Football team was different from what Liberia had predicted earlier on. The Liberian side had promised to cause an upset in the Esuene Stadium, Calabar, unknown to them that they would be the party who left the stadium upset. The Nigerian fans, who filled the stadium, were awed by the mesmerizing skills of Victor Moses. Mikel John Obi is not left out of the high performance list, as he showed Keshi what the Super Eagles missed in the first leg encounter at Monrovia and also why he delivers on a weekly basis to Chelsea FC.
It is impossible not to bask in the Euphoria of last weekend’s victory, since it has been quite a while the Eagles won with such a high margin, however caution must be applied not to get carried away with the victory as there is a more greater task to overcome: winning the AFCON title itself.
It warms the heart to know that The NFF and the Federal Government is not leaving anything to chance this time around, but considering the fact that this trophy has eluded our cabinet for almost two decades, the football administrators must ensure that the coach Stephen Keshi is given every assistance he needs and should be allowed to do his job in other to avoid a repeat of woeful plays in previous AFCON games.
