Female Nigerian athletes have in recent years been the flame that have brought Nigeria’s sports sector before the eyes of the globe via their numerous accomplishments.
In January 2018, four women, Seun Adigun, Ngozi Onwumere, Akuoma Omeoga and Simi Adeagbo became Nigeria’s first ever representatives at the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea.
Simi Adeagbo went on to become Africa’s first ever female Olympic skeleton athlete.
In football, the strength of Nigeria’s brave senior women’s team is no recent news to Africa and the world.
The Super Falcons have consistently dominated the Africa Women’s Cup, with 11 titles to their name, and only recently, the team also won the 2019 WAFU Women’s Cup.
Nigerian international and Barcelona Ladies ace forward, Asisat Oshoala, has completed another first for Nigeria and Africa.
The super forward is the first African woman to score in an UEFA Women’s Champions League Game.
The three time Africa Women’s champion was introduced into the game as an 87th minute substitute for FCB Ladies, which made it her third appearance in the competition.
Although the Nigerian found the back of the net in the 89th minute, it was not enough to stop Lyon, who were already 4 goals up, from clinching the title.
The goal was Oshoala’s first goal in the Women’s Champions League this season, and her eight so far in 11 games for FCB.
