In our last Do You Know?, we discussed the first three times the Super Falcons made it to the FIFA Women’s World Cup.

In this edition we will look at the other times the Falcons qualified for the global showcase and how well they did in the competitions.

2007

At the 2007 FIFA Women’s World Cup, the global football governing body maintained the 16-team format it adopted in the previous edition, with Nigeria faced with the exact same challenge they previously met with.

Nigeria was selected into Group B alongside, North Korea, Sweden and the United States.

The Falcons drew their first game against Sweden and suffered a 2-0 defeat to North Korea.

Nigeria failed to move into the knockout stage of the tournament following a final loss to the USA ladies.

2011

The Super Falcons were were grouped alongside Germany, France and Canada in group A of he tournament.

The Falcons were defeated in their opening game by France, after which the team suffered another heart wrenching 1-0 defeat defeat to Germany.

The Nigeria team won their last game of the tourney, but the late minute comeback was not enough to help the team quality for he next stage of the competition.

2015

In 2015 FIFA adopted a 24-team format for the Women’s World Cup, giving room for three teams to qualify into the knockout stage from each group.

Nigeria was grouped alongside familiar World Cup foes, United states, Sweden and Australia in Group D of the World Cup.

Although the Falcons were among the favorites to qualify from the group stage, they were met with great difficulty and were unable to advance to the knockout round.

Nigeria drew Sweden 3-3 in their first game, before the team suffered a 2-0 defeat to Australia. In their final game, they were stopped by the USA team 1-0, crippling every chance of making it further into the knockout stage.
