The FIFA U17 World Cup has produced many football stars both active and retired. The likes of Nwankwo Kanu, Wilson Oruma, Mikel Obi and foreign stars like Toni Kroos and Cesc Fabregas are all products of the tournament.
However, what most people do not know is that Nigeria won the first edition of the tournament in 1985, which was hosted in China. Nduka Ugbade, who would go on to form part of the glorious Nigeria 1996 Olympics squad, captained the Nigerian side to victory at the inaugural edition of the championship. The final match saw Nigeria beat now defunct West Germany 2-0 in the final to claim the inaugural title.
Nigeria would go on to win four more FIFA U17 World Cup titles, making the nations victory at the tournament a total of five so far. This feat places Nigeria as the most successful nation in the history of the tournament with five titles and three runner-ups, ahead of Brazil with three titles and two runner-ups. As the Golden Eaglets continue preparations ahead of the 18th edition of the U17 World Cup scheduled to hold in Brazil from 6th October to 17th November 2019, Nigerian football faithfuls are anxiously waiting to watch the Manu Garba led Golden Eaglets fly.
