Little knowledge becomes a lot when it is in the right hands. Here are some natural remedies for domestic activities:
Sour soup
- If you discover your soup wants to turn sour or has just gotten sour, you don’t need to throw it away. Just add palm oil, ground crayfish and 1 seasoning cube. Leaving the pot open and allow to boil for some minutes over heat. You won’t believe the result.
- Occasionally, we have had the need to dish soup late in the evening when a visitor, relative or friend suddenly visits and you go through the process of heating it again or refrigeration to keep it fresh. You can save yourself the stress (especially when you have no light to refrigerate it or you’re out of cooking gas). Just sprinkle cold water on the soup after dishing and cover. It will stay fresh till morning.
Boiling rice
The starch in rice often over-boils and drains water down the pot, sometimes, putting off the fire. To prevent this, place a wooden spoon over the boiling pot to prevent water from draining down.
Replacing potash
Commercial potash is not healthy and is often used in making the sauce for abacha and ugba. Some also use it as a tenderizer to cook beans or ukwa in the absence of a pressure cooker.
Unripe plantain peel can be used to replace potash. To use it, roast or dry your unripe plantain peel and grind. Store in a dry container and use it when cooking these meals.
Using bitterleaf as a beans tenderizer
Bitterleaf is not only medicinal but a powerful tenderizer for beans. Add 4 or 5 bitter leaves in your beans while cooking. Amazingly, the bitter taste won’t come out and your beans cook faster.
Others:
- If you don’t like the smell of cabbage while cooking, keep a piece of bread on the cabbage in the vessel while cooking.
- Almost everyone cries when cutting onions. To avoid tears while cutting onions, just chew gum.
