Most times you don’t need to have it all together before you launch out and start working on your idea or passion. Most of the multi-billion dollar companies we idolize today all had pretty little beginnings and had to work through a lot of challenges to get to where they are today.
Susan Wojcicki owned the home where two young men, Larry Page and Sergey Brin– co-founders of Google, came looking for office space. In the winter of 1998, Larry Page and Sergey Brin paid Susan Wojcicki $1,700 a month to work out of the garage in her Menlo Park home. They were still students at Stanford at the time. The duo spent the winter of 1998 in the now famous garage, building the tech company that would change search, and consequently the internet, forever.
After the company grew to have seven staff members, Larry and Sergey decided it was time to relocate to a bigger space. Google had a whiteboard in one of the house’s back rooms that read: “Google’s Worldwide Headquarters.”
After they moved the company to a new office, Susan also decided she wanted to work for Google and became the company’s first marketing manager. She is currently the CEO of YouTube.
Roughly 20 years later, Google has become a multi-billion dollar corporation that answers all of our questions and may soon even drive our cars. The company now owns the house, which is no longer lived but will always serve as a reminder of where Google started.
This goes to show that no matter how little you start in business, passion, commitment, and courage are often all you need to make your company a success.
