The first African country to qualify for the FIFA World Cup was
Egypt in 1934, four years after the first World Cup edition.
It was not until 1978 that an African team, Tunisia won the FIFA World Cup beating Mexico 3-1 to return Africa to its pride place after the continent suffered a long period of absence from the World Cup.
South Africa is the only African country that has hosted the World Cup.

- All FIFA World Cups have either been won by European or South American Teams.
- Europe has won the World Cup 11 times
- South America has won it 9 times.
- Brazil is the biggest South American and World title winner, with a total of 5 titles
- Germany is the biggest winner for Europe with 4 titles.
- Germany has also lost more finals than any other country in 1966, 1982, 1986 and 2002.
- Brazil is the only country to have participated in all FIFA World Cups so far.
- Only Brazil and Italy have been able to win the competition back-to-back; Brazil won the World Cup in 1958 and repeated in 1962, while Italy did the same in 1934 and 1938.
