It isn’t clear if Davido broke the record set by Wizkid in 2018 at the O2 Arena by selling all 20,000 seats. A few days after his performance on the 27th of January, he shared an image on Twitter that seemed to prove the concert had been sold out. But according to an article in The Guardian, Davido only ‘almost’ sold out tickets at the arena. In spite of the controversy, his appearance in concert at the O2 Arena marked Davido’s first appearance on that iconic stage.
Likewise, in a caption above the image Davido shared supporting his sellout claim, he announced plans to make history again, this time in America, with a performance at the Madison Square Garden in New York.
True to his word, Davido performed at the Madison Square Garden on the 20th of August in a spectacular show hosted by 50 Cent. The former G-Unit rapper led a two-hour concert at the indoor arena in Madison Square Garden on, to premiere the final season of the hit television show Power. In addition to a screening of the first episode of Power Season 6, the TV premiere featured a lineup of performances from Snoop Dogg, Trey Songz, Fetty Wap, ASAP Ferg, Jeremih, and a number of other famous American rappers. At some point during the concert, Davido drove fans in the arena wild when he appeared on stage alongside 50 Cent and launched into the song Fall. The huge crowd sang along as Davido performed a super charged act that many of his fans will not likely forget.
Madison Square Garden is the ‘world’s most famous arena’, and has supported excellence in music performance since the year 1879. By joining the record of A-list performers who have appeared at the Garden, Davido has added another memorable milestone to his success story. This performance is proof that the afrobeats prince has made Nigerian entertainment a global commodity. A few hours after his appearance on stage at the Madison Square Garden, he shared his excitement on social media with a tweet, “Dreams do come true for real!”
For almost a year now, Fall has been one of the highest grossing non-Western songs in the United States. Billboard reports that the song has maintained a spot on the World Digital Song Sales Chart for 49 weeks. The World Digital Song Sales Chart is a compilation of non-Western songs with the highest digital sales in the US.
