  In a bid to curtail the spread of COVID-19 in Nigeria, the federal government has reintroduced nationwide lockdown measures which commenced in the early hours (12am) of Tuesday, May 11, 2021.

This information was made public on Monday, May 10, by Dr Mukhtar Mohammed, a member of the Presidential Steering Committee (PSC) on COVID-19 while briefing newsmen in Abuja. During the media briefing on Monday, Dr Mukhtar (Head of Technical Secretariat of the PSC) disclosed that the government has ordered bars and nightclubs to remain closed while the 12 am to 4 am nationwide curfew will be in full force as government heightens measures aimed at curbing the spread of the virus in Nigeria. Commenting further, Dr Mukhtar revealed that mass gatherings have also been restricted to just 50 people at all times, while people trying to access government institutions will be denied access if they fail to put on their facemasks.

Also, government meetings and travels have now been limited to virtual platforms. Dr Mukhtar stressed that international travels would only be encouraged on an essential basis. The new lockdown measures do not affect intra-state travel, Nigerians can travel within. He noted that all safety protocols must be strictly adhered to. As of the time of writing this report, 1,977,479 samples have been tested for COVID-19 in Nigeria. Out of the samples tested, 165,419 cases have been confirmed, 156,300 discharged, 2,065 deaths, and 7,054 active cases. It is not surprising that the government has implemented the new measures because Nigerians engage in a lot of international travels that is capable of bringing new and much more harmful variants of COVID-19 into the country.
