Super Eagles forward, Samuel Chukwueze has been nominated in the list of 40 players vying for the 2019 European Golden Boy award. The list, which was released on Tuesday, September 24, 2019 includes another Nigerian Ayotomiwa Dele-Bashiru, who formerly played for English Premier League champions Manchester City FC, but now plies his trade with Watford FC.
Chukwueze, who plays for Spanish side, Villarreal CF, had an incredible 2018-2019 season which saw him assist Villarreal avoid relegation in the Spanish La Liga. Chukwueze, 20, went on to play an integral role at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, where the Super Eagles finished third, scoring a brilliant goal against the South African national team in the quarter-final. The skillful Nigerian winger has already registered a goal and an assist in the current campaign for Villarreal.
European Golden Boy
The European Golden Boy prize is an annual award which was established by Italian newspaper Tuttosport in 2003 to celebrate the best footballer in European football leagues who is under the age of 21 and had a decent outing in the previous football calendar. Netherlands and Juventus’ defender, Martin De Ligt, won the 2018 edition of the award but will have the Nigerian to contend with for the 2019 prize.
