Christine Ohuruogu has been announced as the Sportswoman of the Year by the
Sunday Times and
Sky Sports for 2013 during an awards ceremony at Sky Studios in London, United Kingdom.
“It’s such a hard category, which is really great, it means we have women who are excelling and doing so much better than people expect us to do,” she said. “I am shocked but I am really happy now.”
Athletes that have won the prestigious award in the past include Paula Radcliffe, Victoria Pendleton, Sally Gunnel, and Dame Tanni Grey-Thompson. Jessica Ennis-Hill won the award in 2012 after the Olympic outing.
Ohuruogu was awarded an MBE (Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire) following her gold medal during the 2008 Olympics. In August 2013, she made history for being the first British woman to win a second world title when she won the 400 meters final in Moscow.
In spite of her recent successes, Ohuruogu still sets her sights on soaring higher.
“The minute you stop looking for something to improve on is the minute you stop running. The plan is to go to Rio, but I have to stay fit,” she said.
