45-year-old Rick Famuyiwa, a Nigerian-American film director, producer, and screenwriter has been contracted to direct the Fox 2000 adaptation of 2018 best selling fantasy novel, “Children of Blood and Bone.”
Famuyiwa has been active in Hollywood since 1999 and has worked on films like the 1999 “The Wood”, “Brown Sugar” released in 2002, “Talk To Me” in 2007, “Our Family Wedding” in 2010 and “Dope” in 2015
Synopsis
The “Children of Blood and Bone” movie tells the story of Zélie Adebola, gifted with magical powers by the gods, but like the other Maji’s in Orisha, she is forbidden by the ruling kosidán to use them. She liaises with her brother, Tzain, and the princess Amari to summon the gods and upturns the tyrannical regime.
Children Of Blood And Bone Novel
The movie is based on the young adult fantasy novel by another Nigerian; 25-year-old Tomi Adeyemi. It is the first of the “Legacy of Orisha” series, published in Mach 2018. Her novel made news after becoming one of the biggest selling debuts in its category.
The author says the story was inspired by Yoruba mythology, fantasy films; “Harry Potter” and “Avatar: The Last Airbender”, books like “Shadowshaper” and “An Ember in the Ashes”, and the Black Lives Matter movement in the United States.
The second novel in the trilogy, titled “Children of Virtue and Vengeance” is expected in June 2019.
“Children of Blood and Bone” film is being produced by Fox 2000 Pictures and Temple Hill Productions, producers of the 2018 American teen romance film “Love, Simon” and thriller drama “The Hate U Give”. The writer would love to see Idris Elba playing Saran and Viola Davis as Mama Agba in the film adaptation of her book, but it awaits to be seen if her wish will come true, as the official cast is yet to be made public.
