The session is finally over, and school doesn’t reopen till September. The holidays are usually a time for boredom, unlearning, idle hands, and the attendant consequences, so more parents are learning to keep their children busy and productive throughout the holidays. If you’ve ever wondered about an alternative to good old summer school, you have that now if your child is over 7! The Save Our Women &Girls Foundation (SOW&G), in conjunction with HTT Communications, and with the support of the Soft-Skills unit of the Fashion Designers Association of Nigeria (FADAN), has put together a holiday program tagged Camp Creative, which promises to be both fun and educative. What inspired this? “We came up with this because we know that hands-on is minds-on for a productive life,” says UN Peace Ambassador and SOW & G founder, Unyime-Ivy King. “If you have ever been part of any of our training, you would know all about the fun and impactful packaging of our programs.” This unique program leaves no one out – not the children and definitely not parents. All minds and hands will be engaged in skills of their choice and there is a lot to choose from, including:
  • Catering/baking/cocktails
  • Soap making and other household detergents
  • Make-up artistry
  • Arts and Crafts using Ankara fabrics
  • Fashion design basics.
The students in the fashion design module who show promise will be linked up to an experienced professional for further tutelage. It doesn’t end with the skills training as there will be short sessions on
  • Etiquette and Character mentorship- which are rudiments for impeccable social grace
  • Entrepreneurship for kids
  • Discovering and nurturing your gifts
  • Internet safety guidelines for kids
  • Critical thinking processes
  • Understanding yourself as a personal brand.
Interestingly, it still doesn’t end there! To really stir things up, there will be a cooking competition among the kids tagged #TheMagicFingers challenge. On the last day of the camp, there will be an excursion to Olumo Rock also for the children -and interested adults. “A comfortable means of transportation with security and refreshments will be provided too,” says Mrs. King. “The holiday period should not be an excuse for laziness, boredom or kids getting into trouble. What better plan can you make than one which includes both your kids and you in something fun and enlightening?” Awesome, right? Don’t miss out!
