“Story, story?”
“Story!”
“Once upon a time?”
“Time, Time!”
“Alors?”
“Alors!”
So began the story telling sessions we enjoyed as children. Today my friends and I still enjoy stories, but we no longer gather at the feet of “Aunties” to listen in wide-eyed wonder to exciting fables and tales. Some of us have pitched their tent with Hollywood, some with novels, others with Nollywood and stage plays.
For me and many others, the fiction story blog is the way to go, and with 26,330 hits as at the time of writing this, toyinfab.wordpress.com is definitely what’s hot at the moment!
The site features the Toyin’s articles and poetry, as well as pieces written by other writers, but it’s the fiction stories that truly make this blog a delight.
The blog offers stories set in rural communities, such as The Footpath and A Tale of Three Goats; and others set in more urban areas, like The Road That Leads Home; and the very real and deeply touching My Wounds May Never Heal, which was published in four instalments.
Each story has lessons everyone can learn from. In fact, at times it seems like this blogger knows what you are thinking and feeling, and articulates those thoughts and emotions for you. At other times, the stories take you down memory lane, evoking recollections of days gone by. Here’s an excerpt from The Deity They Call Husband:
“You alone know why the dark cloud hovers over you, no one else knows why you toss and turn in your bed at night. Most people would be shocked to know how sick and tired you are of your father’s name. You can’t wait to replace it with his surname. The name has been scribbled on your notebook a thousand times; you even tried out the new signature you would use once married, it was so perfect, you however ensure no one can access the secret notebook, you would feel so embarrassed if anyone were to see it. You are convinced it’s time to move on to the next level, trouble is he has refused to take the necessary steps…”
Does any part of that sound familiar?
Though it’s hard to go wrong with wordpress.com, this site is still remarkably organised. If you didn’t start a series from the beginning, you have nothing to worry about. Toyin knows how important it is to get the full story, and makes sure a link to start from Episode 1 is always within reach, whether you’re using a PC or mobile.
Whenever you’re in the mood for a well-written, thought-provoking story, article or poem to help you laugh, reflect and learn, do yourself a favour and stop by here.
