American rapper and record executive Bryan Christopher Williams (AKA Birdman) and budding Nigerian American filmmaker Solomon Onita Jr. will produce a coming of age film titled ‘Tasmanian Devil’
The film is built around the story of Dayo, a 19-year-old Nigerian immigrant in the United States at odds with his very religious father over the boy’s decision to join a college fraternity. The drama will highlight the difference between black cultures and the unique perceptions of fraternities.
The feature film will cast ‘Beast of No Nation’ star Abraham Attah as Dayo, Adepero Oduye from the film “When They See Us” as Dayo’s mother and Ntare Gunna Mbaho Mwine from “The Chi” and “Queen of Katwe” playing Dayo’s father. It also has David Opegbemi of “Black Panther” and Kwesi Boakye.
The project was initially submitted by Solomon Onita, Jr. to BET’s ProjectCre8 Filmmaking Contest. Although it did not win the contest, Birdman’s Cash Money Films and longtime collaborator Groundwurk Studios owned by Benny Boom will be bringing the indie film to life.
The Cash Money Records boss said about working on the project with Benny:
“Benny and I have often discussed making films together and this project presented us with the perfect opportunity to produce a great movie,”
“I have been creating visuals for Cash Money artists for decades and I am excited about this next phase of our collaboration,” says Boom.
“Tazmanian Devil” is written and directed by Solomon Onita Jr, but a release date is yet to be announced
