The Nigerian Banker’s Committee after its
recent announcement of scraping charges if customers use ATM’s of banks other than theirs have announced that all banks will commence biometric capture for all customers – new or existing. This was disclosed at a seminar for finance reporters in Jigawa State, this week, by the Managing Director of the Nigerian Deposit Insurance Corporation, Mr. Umaru Ibrahim.
He said they have expected that they will get data from the National Orientation Agency, but will go on and get theirs directly, since that is not forth coming. The biometric details for customers will further improve security of local banking transactions and is expected to reduce crime. You will recall that the Nigerian Communication Commission mandated that all mobile phone users register their SIM – a process that involves biometric capture. The exercise has been praised and it is continues around the country.
