Daughter of former US President, Bill Clinton and Current Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, Chelsea Clinton paid a one-day visit to Nigeria, yesterday, for a health initiative under her father’s foundation. Clinton Global Initiative – CGI – a foundation run by Bill Clinton, that billions of dollars in aid has been committed to, has several programs it is pursuing for Africa and other parts of the world. Chelsea Clinton, 32, a Board member of CGI’s Health Access Initiative was here on a campaign to reduce deaths of women and children from diarrhea and other preventable diseases. At an event to launch the program, the Nigerian President, Goodluck Jonathan, Norwegian Prime Minster, Jens Stoltenberg and several other dignitaries were in attendance. CGI’s focus is to increase access to Zinc and Oral Rehydration Solutions (ORS), believed to be an effective way to treat diarrhea. According to the CGI: “Increasing the percent of children with diarrhea who receive ORS and zinc to 80 percent by 2015 could help prevent 220,000 Nigerian children from dying. Zinc and ORS can prevent over 90 percent of diarrhea-related deaths and cost less than $0.50, yet less than two percent of children in the country are currently using the complete treatment.”
