The Committee for the award of the Nigerian Prize for Literature has announced that a female Nigerian, Chika Unigwe is the winner of the 2012 prize. She won for her book On Black Sister’s Street and was awarded the sum of $100,000. Her book was one of the three books that made it to the final round for the award – sponsored by the Nigerian Liquefied Natural Gas Limited. The other two are, Only a Canvas By Olusola Olugbesan and Onaedo: The Blacksmith’s Daughter by Ngozi Achebe. Chika Unigwe holds a PhD in Literature from the University of Leiden in Netherlands, and writes in both English and Dutch. She has published several short fiction, was shortlisted for the Caine Prize for African Writing in 2003; and in 2004 she won the BBC Short story Competition and a Commonwealth Short Story Competition award. Unigwe lives in Turnhout, Belgium, with her husband and four children.
