  Nigeria and Liverpool of England striker, Taiwo Awoniyi, has stated that he has proven his worth and deserves to be part of the Super Eagles fold. Awoniyi who spent the 2019/2020 league season with German Bundesliga side, Mainz, on loan from English Premier League Champions, Liverpool FC, and impressed greatly, has largely been ignored by Super Eagles chief coach, Gernot Rohr, for international matches, but the Imperial Football Academy of Nigeria product believes he deserves a chance to be handed an international invitation. The 22-year-old striker has represented Nigeria at the U-17, U-20 and U-23 levels, but is yet to make his mark at the senior national team level with the Super Eagles.

Super Eagles regulars like Leicester City FC of England star, Kelechi Iheanacho, Nigeria’s first-choice goalkeeper, Francis Uzoho, and Success Isaac, were all Awoniyi’s teammates at the youth level, but Awoniyi has not made a single appearance for the biggest African national team. However, Awoniyi expressed his delight at the fact that his former teammates were already making their mark in the senior team and he is optimistic about getting his chance soon.

“I’m happy for [Kelechi] Iheanacho and Uzoho because they are deserving of the opportunity. Personally, I feel like I deserve a chance. I recall when I was playing well and scoring goals in Belgium. Nigeria had a friendly game and I thought I had done enough to get a look in that would hopefully enhance my quest for a UK work permit, but I was overlooked. You begin to understand that it’s not something you can control or have power over. You just need to enjoy what you do and keep on working hard.” Taiwo Awoniyi
