The Global Teacher Prize was established to “underline the importance of educators and the fact that, throughout the world, their efforts deserve to be recognised and celebrated. It seeks to acknowledge the impacts of the very best teachers—not only on their students but on the communities around them.”

To be eligible for the award

  • It is open to teachers currently teaching children who are in compulsory schooling or students who are aged between 5 and 18 years.
  • It is also open to teachers of children aged 4 years and above in an early years government-approved curriculum, as well as part-time teachers and teachers of online courses.
  • The applicant must spend at least 10 hours every week physically teaching children and have a proven plan to remain in the teaching profession for the next five years.
  • Teachers from every kind of school in any part of the world can apply for the award.

The benefit

  • The winner gets the sum of $1 million, which will be paid in equal annual instalments over a ten-year period.
