The Legislative Mentorship Initiative (LMI) is not just a fellowship — it is a transformative platform designed to empower visionary young Nigerians to shape the nation’s governance and legislative future. The program combines classroom instruction, practical field experience, mentorship, and community engagement to build participants’ leadership capacity, policy expertise, and innovative thinking. It aims to equip fellows with the tools needed to strengthen democracy, promote stability, and advance sustainable development in Nigeria.

Through the fellowship, participants gain a deep understanding of the complexities of the legislative process and learn to design inclusive, practical solutions to pressing national issues. Guided by seasoned policymakers and legislative leaders, fellows are nurtured to become change agents and emerging leaders within Nigeria’s public sector.

Program Structure

  • The fellowship is delivered in three comprehensive phases that promote both theoretical and practical learning:
  • 3 Weeks of Residential Training: Engaging lectures, simulations, workshops, and case studies that foster leadership and policy insight.
  • 1 Month of Internship: Practical experience within legislative or public institutions to understand real-world governance dynamics.
  • 1 Month of Virtual Learning & Community Engagement: Continued mentorship, collaborative peer learning, and policy-driven discussions.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Applicants must meet the following requirements to qualify for the LMI Cohort 4 Fellowship:
  • Be a citizen of Nigeria.
  • Be between 21 and 35 years old at the time of application.
  • Possess at least a Bachelor’s degree or HND from an accredited institution.
  • Demonstrate leadership potential and a proven record of community or social service.
  • Show proficiency in English (spoken and written) as well as creativity and innovation in developing practical, inclusive solutions.
  • Exhibit patriotism, vision, and passion for improving Nigeria’s governance and legislative systems.
  • Be ready to fully commit to the program’s values, ethics, and demands.

  • Selected fellows will participate in a variety of enriching activities, such as:
  • Insightful lectures by policymakers, legislators, and governance experts.
  • Case studies on leadership and public administration.
  • Simulations, role-playing sessions, and interactive workshops.
  • Collaborative projects and peer-to-peer learning opportunities.
  • Internships within legislative or government institutions.
  • Educational documentaries, research assignments, and reflective exercises.
  • Broad networking opportunities with influential figures in governance and policy.
